On the 6th of september 2020, Trieste will hand the titel of European City of Science over to Leiden. A prestigious title which also grants the right to host ESOF 2022, the tenth edition of the biggest biennial multidisciplinary science convention of Europe.
The Leiden candidacy is supported by two local champions of Leiden University, Prof. Dr Corinne Hofman and Prof. Dr Ferry Breedveld. Many cities claim to be cities of science. Leiden truly is it. The concentration of talent and scientific knowledge makes for a city in which international talent and expertise have been bringing about innovations for many centuries.
With its university and Bio Science Park, Leiden is among the most prominent scientific knowledge centres in Europe. The University holds a global top ranking in law and languages, as well as in a broad range of medical, archaelogical and physics research, appearing in the top 80 best universities of four internationally leading rankings.
From the day its university was founded in 1575 right up to today, Leiden has been in the vanguard of fundamental and applied science worldwide.
The city is honored to host the 10th edition of ESOF and is looking forward to welcoming delegates from all over the world to its city.

Lucien Geelhoed, conceptual strategist and visionair, has been involved with the planning of Leiden European City of Science since 2016, and has been appointed as intendant. Ferry Breedveld is Professor of internal medicine and rheumatology. He is member of the Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Previously he served as president of the European Legue Against Rheumatism and as CEO of Leiden University Medical Centre.

Corinne Hofman is professor of Caribbean archaeology and former dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. She was CPI of the ERC-synergy NEXUS1492 project (2013-2019). In 2014 she won the SPINOZA prize. She is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Europaea, British Academy and National UNESCO committee.
