It is the only legal authority responsible for the treatment of municipal solid waste in the Prefecture of Chania, located at the most west end of the island of Crete. The prefecture covers an area of 2.376 km2, and has a population of 156.585 inhabitants (2011). DEDISA is a non-profit organization of public interest and an Inter-municipal authority. The main shareholders of DEDISA SA, are the municipalities of the Region of Chania.

The main shareholders of DEDISA SA, are the municipalities of the Region of Chania.
It was funded in 1994 from the collaboration of 13 out of the 23 former municipalities (since 2010 the former 23 municipalities have been redistributed to 7 new municipalities) of the region of Chania. As a inter-municipal company, it is based on the philosophy that solid waste management is not limited to the boundaries of municipalities or communities, but concerns over large areas and the wider society.
In 1996 the company gradually introduced recycling in the city of Chania, with paper collection. The collection network was spread to further regions of the prefecture successfully adapting new materials like plastic and metal collectables. On February 2005 a major step was held with the operation of the Mechanical recycling and composting facility (Technology: Mechanical and Biological Treatment, Composting enriched organic) in the Korakia area that launched Chania as a pioneer in solid waste management in Greece. The number of permanent personnel of DEDISA is approximately 152 permanent Employees with 10% scientific personnel and 130 non-permanent employees. The Solid Waste Recycling & Composting Plant and the Landfill of Chania were constructed from the Prefectural Administration of Chania. The initial commencement of tasks was in May 2002 while Plant’s operation started in February 2005 with a project budget of 30 million Euros - it was funded by 75% from the EU Cohesion Fund II and by 25% from the Prefectural Administration of Chania. Since then, it is operated and managed by the Inter-municipal Company of Solid Waste Management of Chania (DEDISA S.A. OTA). In 2016 took place the modernization of the plant with the installation of ballistic and optical separators, with a budget about 6.000.000 €. It treats five lines of solid waste recovering the recyclable and reusable materials, reefing, compressing, bailing and shipping them to the industry. It is the first facility in Greece that has managed the recovery of the organic fraction of the MSW by mixing and composting it with green waste, to produce compost to the market. Also, the last three years has installed brown bins for the collection of biowastes (only large producers etc hotels), which it processes for compost production.
DEDISA commits to provide local community awareness on Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
